This hotel was built by Ulysses Grant - son of Pres. Grant who makes San Diego his home. We called to see the G.K. [illegible] visited Balboa Park and some of the interresting buildings therein. I especially enjoyed the exibit of Indian specimens, baskets pottery - samples of homes of different tribes etc. We drove to Tijuana in a very good road - to see that tough Mexican town that caters to the thirsty and blood- thirsty Americans in particular Oh, the desgnating eights!!! Then back to San D-- by the "Silver strand to Coronado Beach. The later is rather pretty. Chas. had decided he had enough of San D-- and we thought perhaps the storm would cease by time we were ready to start north. He got the car ready, but after breakfast rain was pouring but we started despite it. I was sorry too - because in our 1921 trip it was foggy all the way north and I wanted to see some of the scenery between San Diego and Pasadena. We lunched as in the previous trip at old San Juan Capistrano - not far from the old mission. It was the same restaurant too. The wild verbena green rampant where there was no cultivating. We stopped in Indio and secured a little more food for our lunch which was enjoyed in the shade of a cottonwood tree (and from the running board of the car) near Whitewater on the main road. Further on had a puncture. This was Tues. One week later we were attending my dear Chas. Funeral. That afternoon again we had a second blowout several miles out of Redlands, where we spent the night, going next day Feb 24 to the Orange Show at Redlands. The next day (got home 24th 7 am) Chas took the Lincoln - Mrs Hatchard home - came home very sick (Our last trip - this - one - Front of picture: Near [illegible] - Calif. During the winter this sand stretch was sold for poring to someone in Phoenix. How the sand will be kept from it I do not guess - At short intervals there were passing places, some of them long enough for four cars, and all were marked as the photo shows, with a post topped with an old tire. The other deserts we had seen have vegitation, but this is a taste of the Sahara Desert. The camera really failed to show how mountanious the sand is in places.
