SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

This Big Walnut Middle School Yearbook is a part of an effort to give a pictorial review for your child in the school year 1969-1970. It is a part of the continuous endeavor to inform you of the accomplishments and goals of your schools.
Close cooperation between parents and teachers is important at all levels of education and especially with the middle school youngster. The biological development of youth in the past twenty-five years or so has undergone a significant trend toward earlier physical and mental maturity in relation to chronological age. This phenomenon, due largely to highly favorable socio-economic factors, shows little indication of abating. Culturally the same trend is evident and expresses itself in the earlier emergences of interest and attitudes previously attributed to older children.
The emergent middle school will best serve today's 10 to 14 year olds which are between childhood and adolescence. With its own planned program of learning opportunities, the middle school's unique arrangement is to serve the educational needs of boys and girls exhibiting a very wide range of differences and traits.

Principal's Message

We are proud to present to you, the students, parents and patrons of the Big Walnut Local School District, this first yearbook for the Big Walnut Middle School. It is hoped that this first edition of our yearbook will serve a dual purpose. For the students it will aid in recalling the pleasantly unique experiences during their year in the middle school. For the parents and patrons in our school district this yearbook shall present pictorial and descriptive accounts of the many aspects of the middle school program.

Environmental awareness is a primary objective for Big Walnut Middle School students. Earth Day provided an opportunity for school-wide participation in a variety of activities designed to improve community and school environment.

CHORUS

The highlight of the year for our combined choruses was the very successful program "Musical Potpourri" which displayed the vocal, instrumental and dancing talents of many.

The purpose of our mini-course program is to provide a broad range of interests for middle school students by capitalizing upon the hobbies, talents and skills of both members of the middle school staff and members of our school district.

The success of any school program is directly proportional to the quality and quantity of in-service training provided for the professional staff. One of our more significant efforts was the First Annual Big Walnut Middle School Seminar conducted by Dr. Ann Grooms and members of her staff at Educational Services Institute, Inc. Funds for this and other training activities were provided through a grant from the Martha Holden Jennings foundation.
