THE BIG TOP
We, the staff members of the 1952 Flame, chose as a
theme for this annual, a Circus, because we felt that it best
typified the excitement of varied activity which our senior
year has brought us.
In following this theme throughout the annual, we see
our fine new building as the Big Top, housing beneath its
roof all the classes and activities which have made our final
year at Big Walnut a year we will long remember. . . .

To a large extent, the schools of today will de-
termine what the citizens of tomorrow will be. The
responsibility of efficiently administrating the local
school system rests with this group of conscientious
citizens, "The School Board."
The providing of the best teachers, books and
equipment is their aim.
Surely no public endeavor requires more com-
mon sense, greater wisdom and devotion to a
cause than that of a school board member.

GALENA CLASS HISTORY
September 2, 1940, we began school with
Miss Naomi Terry, as our teacher. There are
only three from that group graduating this year
namely: Barbara Budgette, David Miller, and
Richard Moore. Our class had Miss Terry as
first graduate teacher, Miss DeMoss third, and
fourth, Mrs. Horlocker fifth grade, Mrs. Cole and
Mrs. Kohberger sixth grade, Miss Campbell
seventh and eighth, Mrs. Smith ninth grade,
and Mr. Furniss tenth grade.
In the third grade we welcomed Ruth Rose in
the sixth grade, Betty McClary came in our
midst in the seventh grade, and while we were
about to begin our eighth year in the Galena
schools, Joe Shoaf, and Joan Zwayer were
added to our enrollment.
Junior Moodespaugh came with us as a
freshman and during that year we were
initiated by the class of '49. We had an enjoy-
able evening and a delightful party followed
the initiation. The sophmores also gave us a
party which we enjoyed very much.
SUNBURY CLASS HISTORY
September 2, 1940 was a big day for thirteen
Big Walnut High Seniors. On that day we be-
gan our formal education in Sunbury School.
Those who have been together the twelve hap-
py years are as follows: Wilma Carnes, Bar-
bara Carter, Wendell Feasel, Eldon Frakes,
Lloyd Huddlestun, Sue Lenhart, Dorothy Long-
shore, Norma Jeane Rader, Mary Jane Snyder,
Evelyn Ulery, Paul Miller, and Jim Whitney.
Miss Tatham and Miss Bickel were our first
grade teachers.
In the second grade we had Miss Donelley
and Miss Van Fossen as our instructors.
Our third grade teacher was Mrs. Mintier.
This year we were joined by Gorden Ulery.
In our fourth year we were joined by Peggy
Cheadle, Christine Ross, Garland Ross, and
Charles Wood. Miss Hogue was our teacher.
Miss Beatty guided us through our fifth year.
Willard Borror, Richard Buell, and Auda Mc-
Kenzie joined us this year.
We were joined in the sixth grade by Weldon
Ross and Shelly Arbuckle. Mrs. Graumlick
was our teacher this year.
Our first year of Junior High was spent under
the guidance of Mr. Crawford.
Our last year of grades and preparation for
high school was the eighth grade. That year
we put on our first play "Buffalo Billy." Com-
mencement night and our very capable teach-
er, Mr. Neilson, will never be forgotten by those
seniors who finished their grade school work
at Sunbury.
The fall of 1948 found us as the green fresh-
men in Sunbury High School. Our home room
advisor was Mrs. Tarpy. Dona Martin joined
us this year. Girls were dressed in night shirts
and pigtails and boys wore long underwear
for our initiation day. This year we sponsored
a refreshment stand at the fall carnival. Our
big social event of the year was a semi-formal
Christmas Dance. In the spring we sponsored
a carnival in the school gymnasium.
Our sophomore year of high school, Mrs. Ro-
wedda served as our advisor. We presented
three one-act plays this year for our money-
making project.
Big Walnut High
Two Schools Merged
While we were at the end of our sophomore
year, we had the very good fortune of experi-
encing the merging of two schools, Galena and
Sunbury. This was quite a task for us at the
beginning, but no class could ever graduate
from a high school and be any more proud of
the fact that we are the first graduating class of
Big Walnut High School's beautiful new build-
ing. By the interest ad work of our most ap-
preciated parents, we have been able to enjoy
this beautiful structure with all modern equip-
ment and facilities.
May the remaining classes leave this build-
ing with the most heartfelt feeling and apprecia-
tion as we leave, for our two years spent in
Big Walnut High School.
During our Junior year we had a very suc-
cessful term with Mr. Furniss and Mrs. Cross
as advisors.
The Junior-Senior Prom and the Junior Class
Play, "Doctor's Orders", were the highlights of
the year. Our Senior year began with all the
thrill and excitement one could ever expect to
have. Mrs. Peregrine and Miss Owens were
assigned as homeroom teachers and we have
spent a very busy year presenting the Class
Play, "Our Miss Brooks", with Mrs. Rowedda
as the directrix. Numerous activities have been
staged by the Senior class so that they could
earn the financial status to make the trip to
Washington. May we remind you that we will
continue living our motto, "Launched but not
anchored" throughout the future years that re-
main ahead of us.

THE SENIOR CLASS
Here is the true life and spirit
of our school--her people. From
the most sophisticated senior
to the most naive eighth grade-
er, her student body forms Big
Walnut's character. How for-
tunate are these students, to be
guided by a wise and sincere-
ly administrative staff and fac-
ulty!
Looking at the pages which
follow, we hope you will per-
ceive what truly interesting
personality these, her people,
give their Alma Mater notes--
Big Walnut High - - -
The snows have melted from
Big Walnut's Pathways; the
rains have come to prepare us
for a new year, the students
and the rest of the world feel a
change of atmosphere--with
the end of school drawing near.
As soon as the willow tree is
enveloped in her pale green
veil, the narcissus and yellow
jonquils giving us the realiza-
tion of beauty beyond descrip-
tion, the trees burst into hun-
dreds of blooms, we seniors of
B.W.H.S. are fully aware we
have "Launched But Not An-
chored."

MUSIC
How many of us ever stop to think
of music a wondrous magic link
With God: taking sometimes the place of
prayer,
When words have failed us 'neath the
weight of care
Music, that knows no country, race or
creed:
But gives to each according to his need.

Y - Teens
photograph of Y - Teens members
Our membership campaign included the Hobo Hike, a wiener
roast at which the football team was entertained, and a candle-
light service in which new members were formally received.
A big event on the Y - Teen calendar every year is the tradi-
tional Homecoming Dance and game, and a very attractive pro-
gram was presented at the game with Richwood.
On February 21, under the leadership of our advisor, Mrs.
Lucille Peregrine, the Y - Teens presented a patriotic chapel serv-
ce for the high school.
The Easter Egg Roll, another traditional Y -Teen project, was
sponsored and was enjoyed by a large crowd of children from
the community.
The Y - Teen calendar closed in the spring with the election of
next year's officers, and plans are being made for cabinet mem-
bers to attend the summer leadership conference at Camp Wild-
wood.
